Purification in Islam

Purification is an essential part of Islamic practice. Learn about Wudu (ablution) and Ghusl (full ritual bath).

Wudu (Ablution)

Wudu is a ritual purification that involves washing specific parts of the body with water. It is required before performing prayers and certain other acts of worship.

When is Wudu Required?

  • - Before performing the five daily prayers (Salah)
  • - Before touching or reciting the Quran
  • - Before performing Tawaf (circling the Kaaba)
  • - It is recommended before going to sleep and before remembrance of Allah

How to Perform Wudu

Make intention (Niyyah) in your heart - Example: "I intend to perform Wudu to purify myself"

Say "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah)

Wash both hands up to the wrists three times

Rinse the mouth three times

Rinse the nose three times

Wash the face three times

Wash the right arm up to the elbow three times, then the left

Wipe the head once

Wipe the inside and outside of the ears

Wipe the back of the neck with the backs of the hands used for the head

Wash the right foot up to the ankle three times, then the left

Ghusl (Full Ritual Bath)

Ghusl is a full body purification required in certain situations. It involves washing the entire body with the intention of purification.

When is Ghusl Required?

  • - Before Friday prayer (recommended)
  • - Before Eid prayers (recommended)
  • - After a private moment with your spouse
  • - After your monthly period ends
  • - After postpartum bleeding ends

How to Perform Ghusl

Make intention (Niyyah) for purification - Example: "I intend to perform Ghusl to purify myself"

Say "Bismillah"

Wash both hands up to the wrists three times

Wash private parts

Perform complete Wudu as you would for prayer

Pour water over your head three times, ensuring it reaches the roots of hair

Wash the right side of the body thoroughly

Wash the left side of the body thoroughly

Ensure water has reached every part of the body
