Fard Prayer
Fajr - Fard:
Quick Checklist
Wudu → Face Qiblah → Niyyah → Sunnah (2 rak'ahs, optional) → Fard (2 rak'ahs, required) → Optional adhkar
Introduction
The Fard prayer of Fajr consists of 2 rak'ahs and is obligatory for every Muslim. Missing this prayer without a valid excuse is a serious matter. This is the required dawn prayer that must be performed between the break of true dawn and sunrise.
Time: From the break of true dawn (Fajr Sadiq) until just before sunrise
1
Before You Start
✓ Check the Prayer Time
Fajr begins at true dawn and ends at sunrise. Use your local masjid timetable or an Islamic app.
✓ Perform Wudu (Ablution)
Be in a state of ritual purity. Full steps of wudu are explained here: How to Perform Wudu.
✓ Clean and Proper Clothing
Covering the 'awrah (private areas):
- For men: Clothing should cover the body from the navel to the area below the knees.
- For women: Clothing should cover the entire body except for the hands and the face.
✓ Face the Qiblah (while standing on a clean mat)
Stand facing the direction of the Ka'bah (Makkah). Use a qiblah app if unsure, and make sure you are standing on a clean area, preferably on a prayer mat (sajjādah) or any clean surface suitable for prayer.
✓ Make the Intention (Niyyah)
Intentions are in the heart; no need to say them out loud. Examples:
- Fard: "I intend to pray 2 rak'ahs Fard of Fajr for Allah."
